The travels of the Emperor Augustus

This month will see many of us heading for the sunshine as the holiday season starts in earnest. A Roman emperor was never really at leisure, but Augustus was certainly well travelled. During his time as emperor he visited every Roman province except for Africa and Sardinia at least once. He particularly liked to travel by sea, and was sometimes accompanied on his journeys by his wife, Livia.

In a world without television, newspapers or the internet, travelling widely was the best way for an emperor to make himself known to his subjects. It gave Augustus a chance to demonstrate his generosity, for example by paying for public buildings or giving out donations of money. Many Italian towns were so proud to receive a visit from Augustus that they decided to celebrate its anniversary from then onwards as their local New Year’s Day.

Augustus sometimes needed to visit the provinces on military business or to calm local concerns. After defeating Antony and Cleopatra in 30 BC he spent a year in Egypt and Asia Minor (modern Turkey), rebuilding his relationship with cities and client kingdoms who had been on the opposing side in the civil war. Tensions were eased as he improved the infrastructure, reconfirmed local rights and privileges, and even found time for a little tourism. In Egypt, he visited the tomb of Alexander the Great, and placed a golden crown and flowers on the body as a mark of respect.

Later on, a more leisurely journey took in Sicily, Greece, Asia Minor and Syria over the course of the years 22 and 19 BC. As in Italy and Egypt, Augustus spent his time resolving local problems and giving donations to the local people. Rather than return to Rome during the winter, when bad weather made sailing dangerous, Augustus stayed in a villa on the island of Samos. After all, who can blame him? With its beaches, mountains and historic sites, Samos is still a popular holiday destination today.

“I Want it All” opens at Palazzo Pfanner in Lucca

Anthony Moman’s “I Want it All” will open at Palazzo Pfanner in Lucca on June 3 and continue on display through June 13. The show, in collaboration with Fineco Bank, Lucca under the patronage of the Municipality of Lucca, will showcase 15 paintings in acrylic on canvas. One sculpture in barbed wire and Swarovski crystals will also be featured by the iconic British artist.

Anthony Moman weaves recurring images of icons and cult objects of our times into his masterpieces. The abstract recreates on canvas the disorientation and loss of values that the artist encounters in everyday life.

Art critic Alice Barontini comments, “They are seductive images, immediate and compelling.”

Emperor Augustus’ House In Rome, The Original Palace

How did Rome’s first emperor live? The emperors who came after Augustus certainly dwelt in style. Nero famously built himself a ‘Golden House’ – so called because it was decorated with gold and precious stones. But Augustus preferred to strike a more modest note.

He lived for most of his life on the Palatine hill in the centre of Rome. This was a popular neighbourhood for Roman politicians, because it overlooked the Forum where the senate house, the law courts and the rostra (a platform for political speech-making) could all be found. Living on the Palatine meant being close to the heart of Roman politics.

Augustus was careful to make sure that his house was no more luxurious than those of his neighbours. The biographer Suetonius reports that it was small, with no marble decoration or fine mosaic pavements, and only a few columns made from rough volcanic stone. For Augustus, this was a way of showing that he was happy to live in the same style as any other senator or magistrate in Rome. His attention would be focused on good government and building projects for the people – not fine living for himself.

But Augustus could still use his house as a status symbol. In 28 BC, a temple was completed next door to the house for Apollo, his patron deity. With a god as his neighbour, it would be clear to all that Augustus enjoyed divine favour. The following year, the senate voted Augustus the right to display an oak-leaf crown and laurel branches around his door in thanks for bringing the civil wars to an end. So everyone who came to visit the emperor would be reminded of his achievements.

The ancient name for the Palatine hill was ‘Palatium’, and because the emperors who came after Augustus lived there too, palatium came to mean simply ‘where the emperor lived’. It is the root of our word ‘palace’ – and all because of where Augustus chose to make his home.
