Meeting Attendees Prefer to Stay at the Landmark “Met” in Cork

Gresham Metropole

Located in the southwest region of Ireland, Cork is the second largest city in the state and is rich in Irish culture. Due to the immigration from Western Europe in the late 20th century, Cork has seen an expansion in cultural diversity. Performing arts have become quite active with attractions such as the Cork School of Music, the Corcadorca Theatre Company, and the Crawford College of Art and Design. The Cork Film Festival and Cork Jazz Festival draw large audiences each year. Home to many musical groups and acts including John Spillane, RTE Vanbrugh Quartet, and Sultans of Ping, Cork offers a variety of entertainment for locals and visitors.

Many restaurants are established in Cork offering a broad choice of cuisines such as Irish, Thai, Chinese, Indian, and European food. There are several hotels in the area but none quite like the famous Gresham Metropole Hotel. Dubbed “the Met” by locals, this hotel is the most popular hotel in the city for tourists and group events when visiting the Emerald Isle.

Sweet History of the Metropole Hotel

Opened in 1897, Gresham’s Metropole Hotel Cork was the grand hotel of the time as it presented opulence and glamour attracting affluent leisure travelers and businessmen. Originally contracted for building a candy store behind the hotel, architects were then commissioned to build the hotel to the highest standards with the upper floors providing hotel accommodations and the lower floor and basement offering retail space. The candy store, known as the “Sweet Shop” that specialized in Turkish delights, became a major attraction on the island and at the hotel for decades to come.

The hotel enjoyed a colorful history through the next several decades with many celebrities and royalty visiting and staying at the hotel. The ownership changed many times and after a major refurbishment in 1999, in 2001 it became the Gresham Metropole Hotel and is recognized as a treasured landmark hotel in the area.
